For a fidgety 9 y.o. to use in the car; very light weight for quite decent bongos
There are many ways this is a great set of bongos. The solid color body is a step up from the cartoon character stuff on many instruments hailed for children. The heads are thinner than those on adult professional-level bongos and it seems they have to be because they are on smaller drums. Unlike other reviewers have said, I found these bongos to have a nice resonant tone when struck/tapped in such a way. All bongos will give a flat thud when struck with a flat palm in the middle of the head. These sound best using one finger about 1 inch in from the rim, but all sounds that can be made on these can be incorporated into rhythms, even the thuds. This is the lightest weight nice bongo I could find for use in the car. In case of an accident these would hurt, but nothing like a larger heavier set which would do damage to a person. Also, smaller, lighter bongos means a bit quieter, which I prefer in the car.The 9 year-old approves and in 20 minutes in a car line he was able to start learning how and where to make the tones he wants, keep a steady 4-beat count, and create good rhythms using quarter and eighth notes. None of this is known to him... yet. He's just having fun but also learning. Later his discoveries can be turned into lessons on rhythm, beats, gentler vs brisker, even fractions! His 4 year-old brother likes them, too, but tends to hit them too hard part of the time. I can't imagine giving one of these particular sets to a younger child, much less a BABY to pound on as they please. Nope.

I'm content with my purchase
The drums are good. Decided to get this for my toddler since we had some electric toy bongo drums that ee weren't satisfied with.As others have said, the drums are somewhat soft audibly without hitting them with the back of the hand. In fact, the egg shakers are often louder... more on the egg shakers, my ~1.5 year old LoVeS the egg shakers , often even more than the drums themselves. Mostly because they are so loud (louder than the "professional" maracas) that we bought her. What can I say. She's a toddler who likes to make noise. Anyway, For me, this was a good deal.

Great sound
The product is well made and has great sound. This is created for small hands and so far has been very durable. The maraca eggs have been flung across the room thrown to floor and have survived without a scratch. But the best part is the sound and manage ability for small hands.

Music fun
Was a gift to granddaughter at 7mo old and she loves it, as well as at 15mo she still does. The shaker eggs are great! Perfect for little hands.

Drum ripped from our 9 month old baby.
We got this for our 9 month old baby and it's been maybe a little over a week and the drum skin has ripped. When we first got it I had noticed the skin on that side seemed extra thin as I could see light through it in spots but I figured it was just the baby who would be using it and it would be okay.It wasn't. It would be disappointing in any case but it's especially annoying because I paid over $40 for this product even though others that weren't labeled as "for kids" were available for the same price. Now to entertain your curiosity for why I bought a set of bongos for a 9 month old, it's because he often starts slapping his hands, alternating left and right, on whatever flat surface he puts them on and it's adorable and hilarious. So I had to get him some bongos to see him go wild on them.Still he's not strong enough to pop a balloon. The skins on these bongos are much too weak!
