Synopsis This collection of stories takes the readers into the complex and mysterious world of Russian legends, which were shaped by the experiences of pre-Christian Slavic people and recorded through an ancient oral tradition which survived the establishment of Orthodox religion. From the Back Cover The variety and colour of Russian myths are as wide ranging as the country of Russia itself. Legends tell of the arrival many centuries ago of the first Slavs, who formed close bonds with the rivers and fertile land that fed and protected them. This became the Moist Earth of their myths, alive with spirits and mysterious forces that came to govern their pattern of life. As the Slavs spread through Russia, moving across unknown mountains and barren steppes, their stories were shaped by the world they saw, the spirits they sensed and the formidable heroes they encountered. These myths are so intricately woven into the oral traditions of the people that even with the arrival of Christianity they were not lost. One legend tells how the mighty Prince Vladimir wiped out the old gods in person, but could not wipe them out from the memory of the people. Their wonders and deeds live on in the new faith through the epic tales and folklore which are retold here. Pyotr Simonov has travelled extensively throughout Russia and Eastern Europe. A Byzantine scholar, he is particularly interested in the links between traditional Russian culture and is currently working on ways to revive traditional methods of farming in Russia. He is a member of Icorec. See all Product description
