Don't get the Hard cover edition! Paperback edition is perfect
The media could not be loaded. Description was wrong. It was not hardcover edition, it was LIBRARY EDITION!! I received an old library book DISCARDED from a library, basically tossed to the trash and then sold on Amazon. I reordered the paperback edition and it was perfect! Can't wait to read it and then pass it on to my kids. Also I'd recommend getting the book that has both book one and two of Skeleton Man in one book.. I didn't realize there was one until after I ordered this one !

Unusual & Well Done!
I was looking for info on Mohawk indian myths when I stumbled onto this middle-grade story featuring a young heroine who is Mohawk, and finds herself encountering a frightening character from tribal mythology. This was a fun, refreshing read. The young heroine lives in the modern world, goes to school, her father works at a bank, her mother does aerobics: in other words, the story does not dwell on her indian heritage. Yet the plot does bring that element in, in a way that makes the story fun and also gives us a main character that anyone can relate to. I enjoyed it very much!

Cheap.
It’s a cheap book that feels cheap. Wish I would’ve went with the used hardback copy instead of the new paperback.

Well Done
This was a good book, and amounted perfectly to my expectations. After reading all of Joseph's books, I found this one and decided to read it. For me personally, I find it a bit weird that all his main characters are native americans experiencing scary things. It makes it harder to connect with the characters because they all feel the same. Perhaps if he had made it a series with the same person rather than multiple native american characters, it would be better, but I suppose it's too late for that. Concerning the actual book, it was good.

One of My Favorite Books
I loved this book when I was a kid, and I love it just as much as an adult. Now I read it to my children and they love it, as well. It kept us at the edge of our seats! Even though I read it so many times before, it's like I'm reading it for the first time over and over again.

comparable to Gaiman's Coraline, only better
I remember reading the skeleton man myth (or something very similar) when I was a child. The chilling memory of the myth stayed with me for 25+ years and was immediately recognizable in this story by Joseph Bruchac. He has done a masterful job of intertwining the myth and modern story, giving the novel a depth that is unusual for children's literature. Perhaps this is what makes the story so scary--the sense of believability that he manages to create. For those who have read Coraline, you will find the plot lines similar. However, as much as I like Gaiman's work, his version lacks the underlying background to give his story the level of depth and reality found in Skeleton Man. Perhaps children with weaker stomachs would find Coraline to be a gentler scare.
