I purchased this coloring book to take with me to visit my granddaughter. We were traveling to the Washington Coast & the Pacific NorthWest is famous for its rain. I thought this would be a fun activity. I was so delighted with the pictures within this coloring book. They were both whimsical & enchanting. A bonus was each page is perforated so you can tear out an individual page allowing for more than 1 person to color at the same time. My granddaughter loved this mermaid coloring book & fairy one by same author that I left them for her to enjoy. When I arrived home to East coast I ordered another. I found this activity to be so relaxing.

Marjorie Sarnat is one of my favorite illustrators. Her background as a textile designer and lover of all things vintage and ephemeral shines through in her coloring book art, and Magnificent Mermaids is no exception.Printed on quality paper (thanks, Creative Haven), each image is one-sided and perforated, allowing the colorist to tear it out and hang it if they choose. My medium of choice is colored pencils, however, I've been using watercolor pencil on my first picture in this book, laying down dry pencil on dry paper, then activating with a small amount of water on a brush, and the paper holds up. I wouldn't suggest saturating it, however, but I wouldn't suggest saturating ANY book. I'm not sure how alcohol markers would do as I don't use them, but again, the images are one-sided so bleed-through wouldn't be a problem as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure as long as you work quickly to get your blends done, you won't have a problem. Regular wax-based and oil-based pencils perform beautifully, and the paper takes several layers with no problem at all. Gel pens and pastels, as well as chalk, also work well on this particular paper.The pictures are all dazzling. Bewitching mermaids swimming with dolphins, fish, and other sea creatures; crystals, orbs, and gemstones; and swaying plants and water movement provide opportunities to truly express your creative side. The pictures are equally accessible to beginners and more accomplished colorists, and I can see myself losing many happy hours in this book.I highly recommend this book as an addition to your coloring book library. I will update my review with pictures as they are completed, noting media and techniques.

Bought this book for a family member. She prefers to color with pencils. She LOVES it! She says the mermaids are beautiful and the coloring pages are FANTASTIC!

I do love mermaids, because they have sea backgrounds often as not, and are graceful with flowing hair. I have to color them!!! So do a lot of other people! This is a very satisfying book full of gorgeous mermaids.Drawings: gorgeous and great varietyPaper: Amazon, you can use your better pencils, or the cheapos, or the best--your skill will determine. Always use a backing sheet, even though Creative Haven books are easy to remove from the binding without damaging the bookSkill level: Medium if you are developing your skill, but even a beginner will derive some pleasure out of these books. Creative Haven is good about not limiting their adult books to just adults. If you are an 8 year old child (or you have a daughter, son or grandchild who is fascinated by mermaids and the sea), see if this is what they like.

Nice color book for the price. It was a gift for my niece and she loved it!

Thought I might want to color one or two but I have 5 marked after a brief flip through and thinking about a few others, so far!! Love this artist. Hoping the paper quality turns out as well as others have experienced. Plan to use pencils and glitter pens. Maybe some water soluble pearl pastels. Look forward to this one. Oh and love the perforated pages and one side only images. A bargain of a book to add to my growing collection.

I really like that the paper is nice and thick so that there’s less chance of bleed through and that the pages are perforated so that you can take remove your picture once completed to display or share pictures to colour. And last but not least I love the beautiful fanciful and artistic mermaid pictures.
