A very well-designed motion-sensing light - except for one missing feature
There are several things I like about this Mr. Beams MB 980 Battery-Operated Indoor/Outdoor Motion-Sensing LED Ceiling Light :- It is BRIGHT!I have tested other motion-sensing LED light before, including the Megabrite Under cabinet LED Lights and Megabrite 10 Wide Area LED Bulbs . Mr Beams blows them all away with a rated light output of 100 lumens, which is almost the same as a Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight . But of course, it will not blind you like a Maglite, because the beam is spread out in a wide cone of about 60-degree.- It maintains consistent brightness over battery voltage range.I prefer to use rechargeable NiMH instead of alkaline batteries in all my LED lights. But most cheaper LED lights are poorly requlated, so they become much dimmer when powered by NiMH cells. Not in this case. The LED consumes nearly the same current when powered by either four fresh alklaine C cells (6V total) or four NiMH C cells (5V). The motion-sensing function can even continue to operate down to around 3V, but with greatly reduced LED brightness.- It has really long battery life. The standby current is extremely low at just 60uA. This translate to just 1.4mAh of drainage per day. With each activation it draws about 360mA of current for 30 seconds, which is equivalent to a 3mAh of drainage. The product description claims "you can get more than 3,200 activations on one set of batteries". This is accurate if you assume each alkaline C battery has a capacity of around 9000mAh. In my case, I'm using a set of Tenergy Centura C Size Low Self-Discharge LSD Rechargeable Batteries with capacity of 4000mAh. So I can expect to get around 1300 activations per recharge.- It is mounted on the ceiling just like a smoke detector. That makes it very easy to remove when replacing batteries. So far everything looks great for this Mr Beams LED light. But there is just one thing missing: It has no power on/off switch. All other motion-sensor lights I tested before have a power switch with ON, OFF and AUTO selections. Not Mr Beams. Its motion sensor is always in standby mode, read to trigger. The LED will only come up when the ambient is dim enough AND there is motion detected. But once the LED is on, it will remain on as long as there is motion detected, regardless of ambient light level. The only way to turn it off is to place it somewhere and leave the room for 30 seconds. This creates a problem every time I need to replace the batteries. As soon as I flip the unit over after a battery change, the LED comes on. When I'm mounting the unit, if my hand ever covers the light sensor, the LED gets triggered again. There are times when I like to get some extra light from Mr Beams, even when the ambient is not completely dark. Other times I may want to prevent the light from triggering too often. But this is hard to do without a manual on/off switch. In summary, I still consider Mr Beams to be a very good motion-sensing LED light. Now, it will definitely be a 5-star product - if only we can convince the manufacturer to add a power on/off switch.[Update on Jan 30, 2013]The first set of Tenergy Centura C rechargeable batteries finally went out after three months of operation in my garage. This seems a bit shorter than my previous estimation of '1300 activations', but recharging those batteries once every three months is reasonable to me.

*almost* Perfect. See suggestions
Let me start off by saying I really like this product, and I will probably buy another for a different application. My current application is in a shower that had little lighting and was pretty dark before I bought this light. I needed something relatively cheap and easy to install. This fits the bill on all of those fronts. Install was easy. What I did not like was the fact that the light has a "feature" that disables the light from working if there is light in the setting that it is in. So for my application of low light, the light would not engage when motion was detected. Before purchasing this product, I read a review of a user that had the same problem and solved it with a small piece of electrical tape. I did the same thing and covered up the light sensor (not the larger motion sensor next to it on the board), and voila - it worked fine. As for the amount of light it puts out- it is perfect. Lights up the shower just fine and is actually in my opinion quite pleasant. One subject that other reviews have not mentioned (at least that I have read) is how this operates in regards to the timer. I was worried that the timer would give out after 30 seconds and I would have the light turning on and off many times during my shower. I have yet to have this happen once. when I move the shower curtain open, the light instantly turns on - I don't even think about it now. I will try to post how long my batteries hold up - my hope is that they last for years, not months. That said I will list a few suggestions to the manufacturer and pros and consSuggestions (why this did not get 5 stars)- The ambient light function. I get why the feature is there, but you should leave the consumer the choice to have it on or off. So adding a switch for this function would be great so I don't have to disassemble the entire light and apply a band aid fix. Its sloppy.- A selector switch to increase the duration of the light be on ie 30 seconds a minute 5 minutes and so on- another MASSIVE improvement that could be made is in the power department. Integrating a li-ion battery and charging mechanism would make this absolutely perfect. The cost of 4 C batteries is a significant consideration and a li-ion option would be great for extended use without paying a ton for batteries.Pros:Great amount of lightSensitive motion sensorEasy installLED should extend the replacement time of the batteries as it consumes low amounts of powerCons:Cost of 4 C batteries to run the light (9 dollars for duracell ultras almost doubles the actual cost of the setup)Ambient light sensor (no switch) had to resort to using electrical tape

Mr Beams batteriebetriebene LED Deckenleuchte
Sehr empfehlenswert !
