tapered cutters suck for plastic, but ok for wood
The 4-prong tapered cutters are what I'm referring to here. I don't even bother with the untapered cutter for plastics. On first glance they look like more expensive ones I have already, but upon cutting I realize they're not. Specifically, the cutting tooth is ground parallel to the plane of rotation. When cutting plastic (PVC trim), they make rubbing contact with the material and builds up heat to melt the material being cut. The nicer ones have teeth ground at an angle from the plane of rotation thus only the advancing face of the tooth makes contact with the material to form the chip. There is negligible rubbing contact which generates much less heat. In practice, with the beveled-ground cutter, I can cut a clean-edged 1/4" thick PVC plug in about 4 quick plunges (under 3 seconds time) on the slowest setting on my drill press. With the lesser parallel-ground cutter being reviewed here, I've not been able to cut any usable plugs because they all have edges warped by heat.

Good plug cutters for the money
These were good cutting some plugs for pine so far. The cutters with the fingers worked fine without any additional work on them but the smooth Cutters needed the Burr remove to work.

These work they way they should.
I use these on maple right away and they work like a charm.

Good cutting set!
This set of plug cutters is the best I have used! They cut very well and don’t burn the wood!

These are junk.
Look carefully at the cutters for these pieces of junk. Look at the marred and damaged cutting surfaces. This was taken literally the moment I opened the package, which was not damaged. The manufacturer probably has a bin of these cutters with workers just dumping them into plastic bags. There was no protection at all of the cutters all jammed together, so they just chewed each other up. Don’t make my error. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY LIKE I DID.
