Different - and better - than most other Dalai Lama books
A very good Dalai Lama book that's not like most others that are simply transcripts of talks. Victor Chen attends various events and meetings with the Dalai Lama around the world and tells what everyone talked about, but in a narrative rather than journalistic way. The meetings are often fascinating, like at a children's hospital in Salt Lake City where a father asks if his son's severe disabilities are karma and the Dalai Lama totally screws up his response so the man feels much less comforted and everybody in the room is unsatisfied. I don't know if this is the impression that Chen meant to convey, but he shows the Dalai Lama as someone who often has nothing concrete to offer to high-level conversations about poverty and trafficking except for his compassion — and this compassion inspires those who understand how to make the concrete details work better. Notes: Chen does not clean up the Dalai Lama's English but transcribes it exactly as said (I liked this because it made it easier to hear the Dalai Lama's voice in my head). And he meets with very few women in this book. Grade: A-

Long Live His Holiness the Dalai Lama!
The writing of the Dalai Lama are food for the starving soul. His words are water for those who are thirsty. His teachings are profound and are truly not about a specific religion as much as they are about giving guidance for every person on earth on how to treat other people. If everyone could learn to live their lives with the compassionate and happiness and respect that His Holiness speaks of,our world hate and prejudices would cease to exist. It's such a simple solution to creating a society where people are loved and regarded as brothers and sisters. have we not learned through the millennia that war is not the answer? Embrace your life with love and kindness and you will receive it in return. be patient, as if placing money in a bank. It takes time for the account to gain interest but the same will happen in your life and in the lives of those around you if you embrace his teachings and practice them every day.Read what he has to say, visit his web site and listen to his live lectures, he has so much to teach if we only open our hearts and minds to what he has to say.

Being in the dance with The Dalai Lama
We all know his name as one of the greatest spiritual leader/teacher in our time ....The author Victor Chan brings to the reader in a series of encounters over a few years how compassionate service plays out in on the world stage both with other great statesman/ teachers to children. I have not followed the Dalai Lama's teaching specially but this small treasure opened a new door to enter into the living buddha nature that awakens .our own journey of compassion.

Great book
Love it. I am still reading it. Love it for the short stories that are filled with lovely dharma teachings. I also love the sort stories as I am visually impaired and when there is a lot of long reading my vision gets overwhelmed and I give up on reading. You will love this gem of a book. I sure do not regret buying it

Bingo!
This is one of HHDL's easiest books to read. Also one of the most beneficial regarding Buddhism. Anyone interested in Buddhism or of HHDL will enjoy this. This compares to HHDL's Art of Happiness in giving simple, easy ways to understand Buddhism and life.

A wonderful book! The author shares his observations of the Dalai Lama in such a way that the reader feels as though he knows the Dalai Lama personally. One gains a deep appreciation of the author's objective reporting style.
