The tools are super cute and my son loves them!
My father taught me how to garden, and I wanted to buy my 5-year-oldā son a set of his own so that he could work with me in the garden. These tools are super cute and my son has really taken to them. I also use a hot knife to engrave his name into the handle, & really personalize them for him.You can buy the hot-knife here is you would like to do the same http://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-Big-Kids-Garden-Tool/dp/B00007L12O?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00We have only started using them this season so I cannot attest to their durability, but currently they have been holding up well. In packaging, the hoe and shovel come with a really blunted edge. I'm sure this was done on purpose for safety reasons but depending on how old your child is; you may want to grind the edge of the hoe to sharpen and actually give it a little cutting power.I have to admit that I've used them all in my garden, and they've held up well. Although I wouldn't push the limits with these tools as they are designed to be used by kids.Nevertheless, both my son and I are satisfied with this product and I'd recommend it as a buy if you are interested in getting your child into gardening.

Good for younger children.
This turned out to be a fairly sturdy tool set. On the set I bought the metal parts don't have greatly sharp edges and the handles don't have splinters. (Yes I actually checked for splinters and sharp edges. The lawyered - up Amazon webpage mentions choking hazards but not splinters! Ha!) I doubt that it would be useful once the child reaches the size where they have serious arm strength or are big for their age but younger children should have a hard time breaking it if they use it as intended. Since it does have edges and the potential to break in sharp ways it should be used under supervision.Children will turn things into weapons, even such things as dolls and teddy bears and this set is no exception to that longstanding observation. The tools should not be used like swords, pole axes, cattle prods et cetera.

Perfectly sized real tools for little helpers!
These are REAL tools for real little helpers! Solid metal tools are totally functional, small versions of real tools just like mom and dad's. The bright colors are appealing and solid enamel. The handles are nice smooth beech, strong but light, with nice leather hangers. These tools are sized for 4-10 year olds, although our toddler loves to help out and can easily handle these. While these tools can't be sharpened without losing their enamel, they are sharp enough to really use to shovel dirt or hoe in the garden and be effective. We look forward to showing our little one how to use her tools to keep her own garden neat and tidy and to plant her veggies and flowers.

Looks like real tools
I like the fact that these are not plastic, But some kids might be better off with plastic ones ( If you know what I mean ) My grandson is five and these are just right for him. He likes working in the dirt with his dad, and these are sturdy enough so he can use them without getting frustrated. They are good for younger ages but my 10 year old grandson ( his cousin ) was visiting him and was a little too rugged for it and broke the handle off the rake, but it was easily fixed. I was excited to find these and I am glad I bought them.

Great buy - good starting set for eager little gardeners!
I purchased these for a 4 year old birthday. We have a garden and I wanted to encourage our nephew to love gardening also. He already loved to help and any time we are out in the garden he would grab the adult tools and try his best to duplicate what we were doing. Now with this kid friendly set his helping us will be much easier for us and for him. I love that these tools are durable and true miniature versions of "real" tools and not the standard plastic tools that don't really do much. With the spring approaching we are already looking forward to starting a garden bed just for him, can't wait!!

Not for taller children! Discrepancy in actual size versus description. Spade, not shovel.
First, these tools are adorable and appear to be sturdy and well made. This is a bargain in comparison to what I found elsewhere. In my area, Oregon, these exact tools are available at Coastal and True Value, sold individually for $8.99 each. The ones in the store do not have the leather strap for hanging. If these had arrived, as advertised, I would have given them 5 stars. However, there is a discrepancy in the actual size of the tools and what is described as their handle length, "27.5 inches." In another place it states, "Product Dimensions: 8 x 1 x 29 inches." Not a one of them has a 27.5" handle. In fact the longest handle of the bunch, on the hoe, is only 24" long. I am measuring from the base of the tool, not the exposed wood. So, including the metal encasement surrounding the wood. The length of each tool, from end to handle is as follows: Yellow Hoe - 27.5", Green Rake - 29", Blue Shovel - 28", Red Rake - 23 3/4." The tools at the hardware store have the same dimensional variations. For some people, this will be no big deal. If you have taller children, these are a poor ergonomic fit and I do not recommend them. (Get the Ames, which have the look and feel of better quality). My son will be two and a half later this month. He is already over 38 inches tall. He was super excited to play with them yesterday, when they arrived. His favorite, "job," is shoveling. Unfortunately, the shovel, which could more accurately be described as a spade, and the red rake are already too short for him. He just naturally ended up playing with the hoe, trying to use it as a shovel. I suspect, because it is the longest and most comfortable for him. By next year,I expect he will outgrow the two longer tools as well. A bargain is only a bargain if it can be utilized. Almost $30 for two out of four usable tools, for one season of gardening is a little steep. Except for the sharpness of the tools, (and they are sharp!), these tools would be better described as, "Toddler tools." I can't imagine that the average height five year old would not be too tall for these tools.
