Beetles in arms!
The cross-country Kubelwagen and the amphibious sister Schwimmwagen were the first VW's series product. These "Beetles in arms" (the "Kubel" practically was a Beetle with a different body and the "Schwimm" was a 4x4 derivative with engine, gear and many other parts directly taken from the VW masterpiece) are the subjects of this good book from Haynes that deepens through the peculiar technique and history of these humble yet essential vehicles. Author Mc Nab is well reknown for tens of good publications on many different military vehicles and is quite effective in introducing the reader to the peculiarities of the two VW cars. Both technical aspects and operational history are well treated. Also the Volkswagen genesis is traced and the iconographic section adds a lot to a very good book on two of the most interesting Nazi's military vehicles

Plenty of unfamiliar WWII pictures and a lot of excellent modern photos
As far as I am aware, this is the first time that a comprehensive review of the VW kubel and schwimm has been attempted, and Chris McNab and Haynes are to be congratulated. Plenty of unfamiliar WWII pictures and a lot of excellent modern photos. Some minor caption mistakes and a few errors (such as the tool box interior on Page 129, which is wrong) and a few omissions (for example - no mention is made of the fact that when driving a kubel, the door handles should be parked in the upright 'locked' position).... but generally speaking this is an excellent book. Highly recommended.

Interesting, almost perfect
This book is on the military ancestors of VW Beetle: there's the history of the Beetle development in the 30s, its employment in WW2 and a detailed explanation on the various mechanical details. It is full of beautiful photos (mainly colour ones) and drawings, and it is surely worth the money. It is so well done that one would expect some more in the final part, in particular about mechanical details such as the 4x4 transmission of the Schwimmwagen, a mechanical apparatus that was repeated neither on the Beetle nor on "the Thing". Also it would have been nice to have some more technical drawings. But everything is perfectible and this book is anyway really very good.
