The band s second album, originally released in 1968, was the first album to feature David Gilmour, who replaced Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals. It is both the last Pink Floyd album on which Syd Barrett appeared and the only studio album to which all five band members contributed. This is Pink Floyd in transition from Barrett's psychedelic whimsy to the style of their epic pieces. Classic tracks include Jugband Blues and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun.. Stereo version (original LP both Mono and Stereo)

with its mix of long strange sounding tracks "Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun" and title track and funny weird songs like " Corporal Clegg"
This is another one of the early Pink Floyd albums that was also prog rock material, with its mix of long strange sounding tracks "Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun" and title track and funny weird songs like " Corporal Clegg". I had this years ago on vinyl LP and now its on Cd.If you love prog rock too, this earlier music from this iconic band is also worth having.

'Transitional' is generous
The end of the Barrett era and (for me) a difficult listen. I'm a Floyd fan, had it all, from new, on vinyl, back in the days when a trip to the record shop was an wild adventure with Bowie, Zeppelin, Floyd, Yes and a myriad of others releasing new stuff every week. I liked the quirky Barrett years though it soon became plain that having fun and getting stoned weren't good commercial or creative bedfellows. Nonetheless, I loved early Floyd for it's innovation. There was a period of 'dearth', I think even the band would admit that, but then albums like Relice, Wish you were here, Division Bell and Wall came along and a new 'Floyd' was born. (Hstory lesson over) The problem with 'Saucerful' is that it's too self-indulgent and disjointed for my taste. Progressive should be about experimentation - but the album, to me, sounds like it was fungi that was being experimented with rather than music. In 'Friends' (sorry to lower the tone) there's an episode where Ross rediscovers his childhood zylophone - much of the album sounds just like 'pretentious Ross' music to me (sorry guys!). I guess it's a 'must have' for any Floyd fanatic (and I am), my original vinyl copy of Meddle was worn flat, no grooves at all!) but I was disappointed, wafts of Barrett, some clever lyrics, some embryonic guitar, but other than bleeps and burps, not much more.

PF's early masterpiece
I first heard these tracks live in a small north London music venue in 1967 – from then on I was hooked on PF's music. This early album shows the talent and uncompromising versatility of the band. They play what they love and it comes through in all their music. Want to get to know where they come from? Then get this album. I had it in mono on vinyl, but only play CDs and MP3s nowadays.

Poor Remastering or Poor Pressing?
Listening to this pressing there is a lot of distortion especially on vocals ( Chorus ) and bass on certain tracks. Cannot decide whether it is down to Poor Remastering or Pressing?. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn record purchased at the same time was perfect. Perhaps I was just unlucky. should have returned it in reality.
