Great peeler! Can't go wrong at this price.
This is really a 4.75 star rating, but close enough to 5 for the full rating.I say this, because I found that I can only hold the peeler in one direction - it does not seem to work when I flip the handle and face it in the other direction. This may just be the way in which I tend to peel things, and is a very minor concern. That said, this is, by far, the best peeler I have ever used! I do quite a bit of cooking, and I am an avid gardener, and peeling many of the items I pluck from the earth is a frequent necessity. This device peels potatoes marvelously, and it made removing the tough rind of a butternut squash a cinch. All the while, I was able to control the peel - that is, I could easily control how much rind or skin I strip off on each swipe. My wife and I have had a "high-end", traditional straight peeler for years, one with a heavy handle and heavy stainless steel construction. Even though it was a nice device, after a couple of years, the curved bridge that extends from the handle to the end of the blade, and actually holds the blade in place, began to un-bend ever so slightly. You may think this is not a big deal, but other reviews here will also tell you that if this goes far enough, the blade will flip inside the bridge, requiring you to constantly twist it back out, and can be very frustrating, not to mention time consuming, when trying to peel multiple items. I can't believe I waited as long as I did to buy this thing, which cost half as much as the "high-end" peeler that I had been struggling to use for so long (it went straight into the trash - not even worthy as a backup). In a nutshell, here are the things I found good and bad:PROS:++ Y design: peeling at this angle takes a brief moment to get used to, but should never "un-bend" the bridge, causing the blade to flip backwards. Not only that, but there is a small tab that holds the blade in place, if it rolls back too far. With this design, you are really peeling downwards (into the sink?), rather than away from you (onto the counter/backsplash?).+ Ergonomic feel: The broad, flat handle makes it easier for me to control the peel, and feels very comfortable to hold.+ Price: It costs a bit more than a basic peeler, even of the Y-design, but at just over $10, I feel it is worth every penny.+ Built-in Gouger: While I am not a huge user of this (I don't mind a little skin in my mashed potatoes), it is very convenient for removing eyes and other imperfections from your food, so you don't have to peel it down so much that you lose precious vegetable in the process.++ Amazon Prime: Need I say more? If you don't have Prime, and order even only a couple times of year, it's worth it. Amazon Prime adds value to every purchase.CON:- Non-Flippability: I could not flip the handle, and peel with the device facing the other direction. Again, this is very minor, and would have only cost a quarter of a star on the rating.Unless something goes wrong with this device (in which case I will post an update), I would certainly buy it again.

Excellent peeler! or "A Sweet Potato Story"
I decided to purchase this peeler after my current peeler (not y-shaped, plastic blade, cushioned grip) dulled and the blade broke off as I was preparing a sweet potato. I had struggled with that peeler for the last few weeks due to the dulling blade and the blade placement. My wrist would get tired from all of the sideways movements, and it only peeled in one direction when it did take. Meal prepping large quantities of food for the week (I'm a big roasted veggie fan...) was exhausting. Once the blade broke, I actually had an easier time peeling the sweet potatoes with a paring knife. I took to amazon to find a better solution.I found several peelers similar to my broken one, but happened upon this OXO Y-shaped pro peeler. At first I was deterred by the price- it was several dollars more expensive than most of the other options. But I have several OXO kitchen tools that are a joy to use and have held up well over time, so I decided to take the plunge and buy it. The replaceable blade really sealed the deal for me- I won't have to worry about purchasing another entire peeler when this one dulls. Less plastic (or metal!) in the landfill is always a plus in my book.I was excited for the tool to arrive the next week as I had run out of prepared sweet potatoes and was eager to get my meal prep going. The peeler itself it a bit weighty- solid metal construction. The grip is covered in a nice plastic that is a little squishy so you can really get a good grip on the tool during use. The handle itself is nicely shaped, and is comfortable to use. The force required to peel vegetables feels evenly distributed instead of concentrated on a thumb or forefinger like my last peeler did. The blade is bi-directional, so you can peel by dragging the blade forward or backward over the vegetable, which is much more efficient. The blade was very sharp on first use and I had no trouble peeling about 4 medium sweet potatoes for this week's meal prep. I appreciated the included eyer on the side of the tool to core out blemishes or other problematic bits. The Y-shape is another game changer for me- much easier on the wrist, especially during extended use. I found I had more control than with a standard vertical peeler (which means fewer chances for slips and accidents), and it was more comfortable user experience overall.I'm excited to have this tool in my kitchen arsenal. I really appreciate things that are sturdy and do their job well, and this OXO Peeler checks all those boxes. Bonus points if it can make my life easier, which it also does. Highly recommend.
