Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story

Amazing book
I bought this book impulsively and wasn’t expecting much...I’ve always been a big fan of Jewel’s music but have never really been interested in celebrity memoirs, so I wasn’t sure I would like it or even finish it. I’m so glad I bought it because this is now one of my favorite books I’ve read. Not only is her life story fascinating, but I felt this book was full of so much insight and advice that I will benefit from in my own life. I even found myself highlighting and circling certain lines that stood out to me. As a young(ish) mother, I particularly related to her thoughts on motherhood at the end. I highly recommend this book and I’m really grateful that I purchased it. I plan on buying copies for friends.

Inspiring and Awe Worthy
I grew up in the '90s and was kind of a fan of Jewel, and did love her poetry book. After reading this book, I have a whole new respect for this artist. This book helped me understand some of her songs, which gave them a much more profound meaning. For instance, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" meant so much more once I knew the story behind it. Same with "Love Used to Be."Jewel's book has been inspiring, surprising, and highly encouraging. I truly loved it.Note: The extra content in this Deluxe edition did not work on my Android's Kindle app, nor on my tablets. So you might need a Kindle Fire or something similar to access the deluxe content.

I will read this over and over, a great ride with a singer/songwriter/poet. I will want that ride again.
I can't say enough about this book....1st and foremost, I've always been a fan, but you do not have to be to get a million other things out of the book.Talented in writing and so vulnerable and honest. Fantastical adventures and real hardships. Exciting people (celebrity) appearances and some cool characters. I feel like I traveled just reading.I read her first book and even if I had heard a story before, this go round has much more detail. She's an angel, she's everybody, she's American dreams and humble, salt of the earth and makes me look inside myself as she so purposefully does herself.

Jewel Shares her Path
Jewel is the kind of person that hitchhiked to Mexico by herself in high school. That I thought she skimmed or summarized some of the experiences that were most difficult, painful are why I’d ding this review a bit. However, what she does well and powerfully is she shares her path out. Her path out is on the page— the thinking behind it, the steps forward. So relatable, inspiring, that it makes you want to be a better person. Choose joy, choose to read her story of becoming.

Some great content BUT lots of mundane filler
I picked this up after listening to Jewel lead a guided meditation during a recent NY Times online event. I had never realized she was such a deep person and had undergone so much childhood trauma.Having said that, I found myself starting to skim through a lot of the book just to be done with it. Jewel describes a very chaotic and difficult childhood that is heartbreaking. The betrayal she experienced with her Mom is so sad. Those stories are worth sharing - but I don’t know if this warranted a book of 382 pages. There is way too much filler here with personal photos, poetry and mundane events described with exceedingly unnecessary detail. Some of this came off as incredibly self-serving but mostly just boring.

Bold and Raw
Jewel takes the reader on a ride that surprises and inspires. Her open, vulnerable approach to this memoir shows unflinching honesty and courage. Despite the challenges she faced as a child, the healthy choices she makes at a young age reveal wisdom beyond her years. The only reason I didn't give Never Broken five stars is for two reasons: (1) the lack of openness about the ending of her, and, (2) the amount of spiritual arrogance which follows. What I loved about this book is how Jewel details her life experiences. However, she leaves the reader having to make assumptions about why her long-term relationship ends. Instead of expanding on this life-changing event, she spouts spiritual suggestions which is antithetical to the earlier chapters. All in all, I would highly recommend this book.

This is the most life inspiring book I've ever read.
I remember buying the Pieces of You CD in the 90's and listening to it non-stop. Her voice is amazing, and her writing is so personal and very honest. Jewel has always been this way. I also got the chance to see her perform live years ago. It was just her and her guitar. That's all she needs. She sang every type of music, including opera and yodeling. She spoke to the crowd like we were just friends hanging out. My husband and I also love her family's show, Alaska: The Last Frontier. I admire so much their way of life. When I found this book and began reading it, I couldn't believe how much she struggled and was able to overcome. She always stayed strong, true to herself, and never lost faith. I will think of her and the words in this book when dealing with my own struggles. I thank her for being brave enough to put it all out there so that others may learn from her experiences. She is a beautiful woman.
