The Book of Draft Horses: A Guide to Selecting, Caring, and Training

Interesting Info
I am breeding for my first personal draft horse this year (a leased Clydesdale mare x a Gypsy Vanner stallion) after only owning AQHA horses my entire life. I bought this and one other draft book to study up before the foal arrives. This book had a lot of interesting facts about draft horses and their care and keeping and I recommend it for anyone thinking about getting involved in draft horses!

The Book of Draft Horses, The Gentle Giants that Built the World
The title implies that this is a book on the history of draft horses, but it is much more. It does devote the first chapter to history, but the remainder of the book is very current and complete. It gives good information on the various breeds of draft horses, buying and caring for your horses, as well as chapters on showing, breeding and working draft horses. This book is easy to read and gives a very good overview of the basics of draft horse ownership. Written in 2007, the information is very up-to-date.

Great Book for Draft Horse owners.
Very informative. Easy to understand; well written. Discusses issues that pertain only to draft horses. Would recommend it to other draft horse owners. Great Value and great addition to your draft horse library.

Good Starter but very American
This book is a bit of a disappoint, the images are US based horses and if you will instantly notice the difference between breed standards outside the US, certainly compared to drafts and the various draft breed standards in the UK they look completely different horses. While the Author may have had drafts 'in the family', she herself doesn't own, ride or breed them from what can be gathered from the book and the dust jacket, there's no mistaking the little Arabian on the back of the dust jacket for a draft horse. Her knowledge is fair to good, more intellectual than practical knowledge, the book is well written, but the print particularly the image quality isn't wonderful. The images of drafts at work, and primarily US focus draft culture is interesting, but I constantly find myself thinking 'was it worth the money?' if you can get this book for under £8 and are interested in basics of how the breeds standard, use and culture of using drafts horses is in the US then it's good book to start with or makes a good bookshelf fuller. If you want more details on draft breeds (the book only touches on about 8 draft breeds, the rest being actually light harness horses, not light draft which is what they are referred to), hitching, harness, and a greater variety of draft breeds then I'd recommend another book. It's not a bad book, just could be better. If you know a little about drafts you may find a few things of interest i.e images of a 48 team hitch, but you'll not get much detail or depth.
