Got this as a just in case. Came fast and high quality. Perfect for camping or just keeping in your car and one home.

Got this a Christmas gift for a family member that is into outdoor survival. He loved it. It is heavy metal, and worked great when he tried it out. It also has a whistle on it. I might get one just to have in case of emergency.

Fire starter is great. Whistle is great. Compass not so great.This works as described for starting fires. The instructions are easy to follow. Scrape some magnesium onto your kindling. It takes a fair amount to get a big enough fire going, so keep scraping! Then quickly slide the striker along the rod to send sparks into the scrapings. I first did this with a paper towel so that I could see how much material was being scraped off. Due to the amount of scrapings needed, it might be best to buy magnesium shavings separately, but that adds bulk to your go bag.Striking technique: I found that a motion similar to striking a match works best. I put the striker/scraper against the rod but pointed away from the kindling, with my thumb putting pressure on the striker. A flip of wrist slides the striker firmly against the rod and ends up pointing toward the kindling, sending sparks into your scrapings. This can be done without removing the striker from the lanyard.The case serves as a handle for the magnesium rod, making it easier to hold onto while scraping and striking. The case protects the magnesium rod while not starting fires.The case also has a small storage compartment that has a hinged rubber stopper/seal. There is no mention of this in the instructions nor on the item description. Another reviewer indicated that the compartment could hold wooden matches. I think that's a great idea. I tested with full-sized kitchen matches and found I could fit four, but only if I cut the matches to be a little shorter. Perhaps a better use of the compartment would be to store some magnesium shavings. It would at least be enough for one or two fires.The whistle is loud and very high pitched. No doubt it will carry far in an emergency. It takes a little more effort than I expected. At first I thought it did not work. But then I really blew into it and sent a piercing note into the neighborhood.Compass does not work well. I consider such glue-on compasses as gimmicks from the start and therefore no stars off. In this case the compass will not level itself to allow free spinning. If you fuss with it enough it may eventually point approximately north. It is better to invest in a quality compass.

This fire starter is very easy to use and doesn’t take long to get a fire going! I recommend this fire starter for the quality and price. This is a must have for your bug out bag.

The media could not be loaded.  Small form factor makes it easy to carry. I attached it to my hiking bag. It’s perfect as a backup to whatever your main source of light/fire may be. Overall great pickup.

The media could not be loaded.  A really nice and well made fire starter with a nice lanyard and whistle and a sketchy compass...It isn't perfect and it could be improved but over, not including the crappy compass, it is a really nice fire starter and whistle that has a really nice lanyard to hold almost everything together.Good day & God Bless...Randall M.
