Walking in the Dolomites: 25 Multi-day Routes in Italy's Dolomites

Invaluable guidebook
I bought the 2003 edition and used it extensively on a trip in 2005 and now, planning a return trip in 2016, I'm buying the update. It is invaluable. You can tell the level of difficulty from a hike's Grade at the top, and furthermore you can gauge it for individual Stages from a close reading of the hike descriptions. (Thus, you may be able to mix and match sections from different intersecting walks, take alternate routes, or do only parts of longer hikes, if certain sections will be too much of a challenge.) The text scrupulously details stretches involving (at the time of writing) crumbly scree, eroded spots, scrambles, exposed areas, ladders, vie ferrate, and so on. It also points you toward supernaturally beautiful scenery--though there seem not to be too many places in the Dolomites lacking it. You still need local maps for visualizing the ups and downs, route numbers and so on, but this book is a terrific launch in trip planning. It even describes various huts en route, and is candid about which ones stand out. Those who have found the book unhelpful or lacking seem not to have read it very carefully, as I just did once again--cover to cover.

Not worth it.
This heavy book is not that useful. The hike descriptions are vague, not that valuable. I only remember leaving it behind because it was not worth the weight of hiking with it. Has some great info in it, but not a real hiking guide in my opionion .

Good planning guide!
Although I haven't had occasion to actually use this guidebook "in the field," I believe that it will be very useful in helping me plan an upcoming trip to the Dolomites. The volume is pocket-size, and thereby portable. The illustrations are full-color and the printing job nicely executed. There is quite a bit of useful information at the beginning that is directed to rank beginners in mountain walking; this is obviously useful to some. There are also many good secondary references for obtaining additional local information. All things considered--a very useful little book; I'm satisfied with the purchase.

but the details seem good.
Very helpful for planning our trip to the Dolomites. The text was readable and clear. Not sure yet about the accuracy as we haven't traveled yet, but the details seem good.

Great book
This book has it all...lots of detail on various hikes, maybe a bit too much. I would have loved for the author to recommend specific hikes for the novice, intermediate and for the advance. And recommending one day hikes from a base camp would have been good. It's all in the book but you have to search through each and decide what's best for you.

Not for Alta Via 1.
For people who want to do day hikes and a few days of hiking here and there around this area, this book seems to be very informative. However, there is no (useful) information given for Alta Via 1, which is what I thought this book will contain.

Cicerone always provides excellent guide books with detailed information
As always, Cicerone always provides excellent guide books with detailed information. I've purchased several Cicerone books for numerous hiking trips, and have never been disappointed.

A clear and engaging guide to walking in the Dolomite area
I kept referring back to this little guide during my walk in the beautiful Catinaccio group. At the end of each route description, Price includes phone numbers for rifugios in that particular area. These came in handy when I had to change course due to late-lying snow in mid-July. That's also a situation when the Tabacco maps recommended in the guide become invaluable. I am also indebted to Price for advising walkers to take an umbrella as it bucketed down on the first day! All in all, a nicely written and very useful guide.
