Q: Will this fit my 1996 xl1200 sportster sport?

It will slide into your stock manifold rubber boot but you still need an air box adapter. A better choice would be the Mikuni "Easy Kit" for your specific model. You can get that from us by going to our website and at the top of the home page where it says "what are you looking for" type in mk4210 if you prefer the version that has the air cleaner backplate that allows the use of the stock air cleaner and cover, or type in mk4211 if you want the version that allows the use of an after market air cleaner. Either one will allow you to use your stock choke, throttle and idle cables. Let us know if we can ever help you. Q: Does it say mikuni on the carburetor?

Yes, The name Mikuni is cast into the main body casting of the carburetor, it is on the side with the fuel fitting. The name is up toward the top of the unit.

Q: do the throttle cables really enter the carb. on the LEFT side?

No. When carb is mounted on motorcycle,the cables are on right of carb. The idle adjust is on the left as shown in the picture.

Q: Would this carb work on 1977 ironhead 1000cc?

It might wake up your bike. I put it on my 1999 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1500 cc and my 1990 Harley FLHT Plice Special. And it was awesome.
