Cans I received mis-labeled! Not Sockeye! Contains Keta also called Chum or Silverbite Salmon
With Sockeye currently selling for around $9-10 a can, I wondered how Bumblebee Sockeye could be selling on Amazon fluctuating over several months in the $3+ and $4+ range. We bought a couple cans and upon opening, found it was courser and drier than any sockeye I had bought before. An article on thespruceeats.com (8 best canned salmon of 2024) said their can of BumbleBee (which was pink salmon) had tracemycatch.com on the label to see info about the salmon in the can. They had to play with the numbers in the code on their can, using only part of them to get it to work, as did I when I looked up the code on my can of supposed Sockeye. BumbleBee just tells you to enter the code on the can, above the best by date (which was OCT 2027). My code was K2902ND K LWA05 2 I2318. I got it to work by entering part of the code- 2902NDKLWA05 without any spaces. It pulled up this info for my can: "The salmon in your product is Keta Salmon (also known as Chum or Silverbite Salmon.) It was caught in Central Region of Alaska using the Purse Sein fishing method, and canned in Na Knek, Alaska." I believe if canned in Alaska this would make it a product of Alaska, but had a label for Sockeye salmon, showing it a product of Thailand. Keta or Chum salmon is a much cheaper salmon than sockeye. No wonder it is being sold on Amazon so cheap. A salmon article on tastingtable.com lists 6 species of salmon according to quality. They rate #6 Chum (Keta) last place, below #5 Pink Salmon, with Sockeye #2 and King Salmon as #1. This BumbleBee Keta Salmon is not the quality of Sockeye by any means and not any bargain. Perhaps BumbleBee was aware that they made a mistake and put the wrong labels on a zillion cans of salmon and decided to just sell it super cheap to get rid of it and maybe people won't notice the difference, or won't care because of the low price. Like that makes it OK to sell something that isn't what it says it is. If it wasn't for that low price, I might wonder if maybe a few Keta salmon accidentally got mixed in with the Sockeye and I just happened to get those cans. But the price makes me think it was a screw up in the cannery that they were well aware of when they decided to go ahead and sell them as is.
