Working well for a fast growing teenager
10/22/2019 Update: When we received the balaclava, it came with a card soliciting a review in return for another free balacava. The review that you see below is what I wrote. I felt it only fair to include here that disclaimer. Now, having said that, I have to add that *I* took the second balacava and have been wearing it myself. I love it—! It is really a high quality piece of gear. Time will tell. I will update this in the future regarding my experience over time, but this balacava is warm, and versatile. Having lost probably about 98% of my hair this ver the last 30 years, and developing the habit of shaving the rest pert near to the skin on a regular basis, I have come to really appreciate the many functions of this balacava, especially considering how little space it takes. I keep it going b my pocket and pull it out frequently already. It’s really nice to haveOriginal review:My 15yo son, who is otherwise very healthy and active, has to keep warm. It's kind of a battle with him, because he complains that he doesn't feel cold and doesn't want to wear this extra stuff. But he is growing so fast that his calories are going "up", rather than "on" in the form of fat, so he doesn't have a lot on him to stay warm. So on the advice of doctors, he's got to try to keep his body core as warm as possible when he is out running around, even to the point of wearing bicycling gloves any time the temperture starts getting near the 60s.I know that a lot of body heat is lost through the top of the head, so I started looking at balacavas. I read the reviews and comments on Amazon.com on different brands of balaclava, and this one seemed to be one of the best, so we got him this one, and he loves it. He stays quite warm and comfortable with it and does not hesitate to wear it when he goes outside.

Versatile; won me over
This silly thing won me over with its quality production and versatility. ;) Seriously -- well-made, Self Pro.I had initially bought it to work out in. TBH, I think it is not _great_ for that. It's a bit heavy and hot for anything but actual cold weather, around your neck and the back of your head, and you have to really pull it way up the back of your head to get it not to drop down off your nose and mouth, and even then if you're really working out -- running hard, etc. -- it's not very stable. I might gently suggest to the good people (non-ironic, this; that is my impression, too) at Self-Pro that they soften that part of the sales pitch. If you have it beneath a helmet or held up while on a vehicle I bet it works, but as _workout_ gear it's not good.So I almost returned it. BUT! I live in LA. We all need to wear masks. I don't always want to strap on my I-am-Bane carbon filter thing; plus, there are times (even in LA -- say, of a cool evening) when it's perfectly nice to have a thing around my neck. And there WILL BE times, I imagine, where it's even nice to have the cap part up (that hasn't happened to me yet, but give it time. We're going to be in this moment for a minute, I think.) For THAT purpose -- this has been, for me, an exceptionally well-made and designed device. It's convenient and works great for that purpose; it's not nearly as fussy or I-am-Bane as my carbon filter but it satisfies public and personal requirements to minimize risk to others' through my exhalations, etc.So if you took off "workout" as a possibility, it would get 5 stars for versatility; beyond actual hard workouts, it strikes me as very versatile. And most of all -- this is why it still gets 5 stars overall -- I like wearing it. I like it. It's comfortable and nice. It's a well-made, well-designed thing that's a little unusual. So this is a happy 5-stars for a product that, I'd argue sliiiiightly based on its sales pitch, I'd initially misused. You cannot really use this for hard, hot workouts (unless they're the kind where a helmet or other equipment is holding it up, I guess; and your face and neck need to be hotly covered anyway. I can't really imagine what kind of workout that might be (cross country skiing?), but it may exist). But it is a _nifty, useful, nice-to-wear and evidently well-constructed thing._ I'm glad I didn't return it, and to have it, and to be thus now writing this positive review.

Nice mask for layering with hat and neck gaiter
Nice mask for layering with hat and neck gaiter. Thin but some nice overlap in key areas of ears. Not sure entirely windproof but nice to have on cold day. Found that if I raised bottom over my nose that sides would start to cut into my lower eye creating a very uncomfortable feeling and making me readjust constantly. Not sure if design flaw (they are all typically cut the same for this type of product), my face proportions or otherwise.

Warm....yummy!
Love this! We get inversion every winter, and man does it get cold here sometimes! I wore this today, multiple times, in the middle of the inversion, at 14 degrees F, and my face didn't freeze at all! I was only out for 10 minutes at the most, so don't know about long term, but I certainly noticed the difference since I've had it. I also work where there is a terrible wind all winter long; this really protected from the wind also. I'm not saying it didn't let any wind through, but it was a huge difference! This keeps all areas that are covered warm and I love to be warm!! My ears are super sensitive to wind and this doesn't let any blow by; it's amazing; no earaches for me! I can't stop smiling and being amazed at how much warmer my whole head, ears, neck, and face are wearing this thing! I would advise you to get one, or more, would make a great gift for anyone who hates the cold and feels it worse than other people! I'm not trying to be fashionable, just warm, and this does the job. I had a fleece one before and it was just too loose to be warm, resist wind and cold; this is tight to the head and a great material; I'd love to get a body suit out of it for a base layer! This has been my favorite purchase for cold protection along with my Terramar sock liners for my whole life. I'm 47, so that's a long time to search for warmth! Enjoy!UPDATE 1/28/17Today it was 5 degrees F with no wind; I wear glasses so I can't wear this over my nose. I was out for a short time, 5-10 minutes, and could definitely feel the difference between my nose and parts under that were covered. My nose was freezing; the rest of my face was warm. I do wear a hat over this, but it does such a great job keeping my face warm.

Light, breathable, and versatile
I got this balaclava to do winter sports and it's been great! The configuration options are really useful, allowing me to switch between using it as a neck warmer to a full-on balaclava and everything in between. It's also really breathable so I could continue using it as a full face cover during high aerobic activity. The only downside is that it will rotate around my neck when I'm using it as a neck warmer and when I'm trying to switch to the nose/mouth cover configuration, it's hard to tell which part I should be putting over my mouth. If some way to identify the front/mouth section could be added, it would fix this problem.

Useless
This balaclava did not block the wind at all! It felt like my face was bare! Except that it was soaking wet after only 2 ski runs, & that moisture was right on my skin & mouth so it was annoying to speak & my face was freezing. I promptly went back to my old balaclava which had some insulating & moisture-wicking qualities.
