The Greatest Showman

Hugh Jackman has always been a tremendous talent. When he played gay pianist & composer, Peter Allen, on Broadway in 2003, I was amazed at his vocal chops, tenacity, diversity, & his comical & playful spirit. The Greatest Showman tells a romanticized version of P.T. Barnum's beginnings in show business & how he got people (oddities) who were always in the shadows, due to their perceived abnormal appearance, out into the public, & how these people became a family to one another. The premier song is "This Is Me", a powerful, captivating number with all the oddities singing & dancing & telling themselves & the world, they may be bruised & looked down on, but that they are still people deserving of life, respect, happiness, freedom, & to not be ashamed of who they are, regardless of deformity. It is such a rousing, magnificent anthemic performance that I kept hitting the reverse chapter button to experience this amazing scene & triumph of the outcasts over & over. No real animals were used in the film, which I def liked, given the history of how animals were treated by circuses, side shows, & zoos back then. I would recommend this film even for those who don't particularly like musicals. If you ever felt like the odd-man out (or woman) in life, as I have, this movie will raise your heart, soul, & spirit.

An amazing movie - it's whimsical and fun and entertaining. Based on true events, however, this movie sheds a much happier light on P.T. Barnum.

Teen daughters love this and can sing along to every song as well as quote most of the movie. Enjoyable and fairly wholesome, and a great recap of "what used to be" before the Barnum & Bailey Circus closed.
