Excellent for Scrabble® players.
To begin with, it should be realized that this is not a general purpose dictionary; it's specifically designed for Scrabble players. That's why all the definitions of each word are not given. As noted in Steve Keeley's very helpful review, it can be converted to the Official Word List -- the unexpurgated one -- and it can be used to find all possible official words in any rack. The word games that are included are fun to play, too. There is a useful feature that's not in the printed instructions, but appears by pressing the HELP button when defining words. To scroll to the right to see the entire definition, it's not necessary to hold down the right arrow; just press ENTER again and the scrolling is done automatically. The four AAA batteries that are required are not included, so it's a good idea to have them ready, as well as a small Phillips screwdriver, which you'll need to take the cover off the battery compartment. There's no need to put the screw back on when you replace the cover; it will be secure enough without it. In fact, once you get the cover off -- which can be a struggle -- you might want to put it back by pressing it down just enough to hear a click; it will save you a lot of trouble later. Once you get that done you'll be free to enjoy this device without any further difficulties.Peel off the horizontal strip with the word CHAMPION on it; now the display is unobstructed. But don't try to remove the square piece of plasticthat covers the entire device -- its function is to protect against wear and smudges. To conclude: I highly recommend the Franklin 228 for Scrabble® players.

Fine little machine
The Franklin SCR-228 Scrabble Dictionary replaces the SCR-226 (which I still use). The new SCR-228 was a gift for a competitor with whom I've been playing over the interweb. The SCR-228 has the newly approved words sanctioned by the Scrabble big-boys and is a good addition to any book-type dictionaries that you may be using. The anagramming function and the 'games' included afford practice and learning sessions that will improve your chances of winning.Try it; you'll like it. And they use very little battery power.

Perfect Scrabble Pal!
I purchased this as a gift for a family friend who LOVES to play Scrabble. She plays Scrabble on the computer all the time. But the main reason I bought this for her is because she plays Scrabble with her niece every chance she gets. I watched them play one evening, and they had to dig out a large, old dictionary to confirm a word. That's when I decided to find her an electronic dictionary. I gave it to her this Christmas, and she was so excited. She traveled down to visit her niece and brought the Scrabble dictionary with her. They did not get a chance to play a game of Scrabble, but they did "play" with the new dictionary, and can not wait till things quiet down a bit so they can get back to their marathon Scrabble games - and not have to drag out the heavy, old dictionary.

If it works, its great.
It didn't work, so I returned it. Before I got this one, I had an old one that I used all the time, but I dropped it and it broke, so I wanted a new one.

Love this gadget!
The electronic Scrabble Dictionary is terrific! It gives quick info about words, Are they real words? What do they mean? Are there variant spellings? It also gives suggestions for using the letters you have on your rack. It's a big help when playing Scrabble. It also has a couple of word games you can play when you're not at the Scrabble table. Definitely a worthwhile product.

Needs to have update technology available
outdated vocabulary and not completely inclusive of common terminology as you might expect. A new printed scrabble dictionary paperback is out that does a better job, especially in catching the rapidly evolving language of technology. Should be "updateable" with a chip change! buying something electronic that can rapidly become outdated doesn't make sense. Hope this gizmo has a newer version coming soon. This would be a very handy item for scrabble players if it could be updated regularly because it's fast and has nice features for learning new words, meanings, and constructing words from entered letters.

We call it "The Cheat Machine"
This is a cool device for "friendly" (i.e. challenge-free) games of Scrabble. Neither my wife nor I have the greatest of vocabularies, and I suffer from dyslexia, as well. So, even though we love to play games, Scrabble had been off-limits for years. Then, I purchased our first (of two) Franklin Electronics Scrabble SCR-228 Players Dictionaries, and the game became fun for us. Now we play it every weekend morning. What changed? The Franklin Electronics Scrabble SCR-228 Players Dictionary has a feature that allows players to key-in their letters, and then produces a list of possible words (with their basic point totals). It also has a database of so-called "naughty" words that are legal to use but do not appear in the OSPD, 4th Edition. It's been a big help in expanding our vocabulary. Why have I bought a second machine? Because, after a few drops of rain got into the original unit's casing, the screen display became unusable. Something to think about before purchasing this product.

censoring offensive terms
You can tell this model from the 226 by a slightly different color pattern and perhaps a little bit more readable screen. But the big difference in this machine is that tho it has given us qi and za to use, it has taken away a lot of the old staples. What it has taken out is all the words that you would look up as a kid that were "naughty" and all the terms that were in the old dictionaries that had "offensive term" behind it.But overall, it is an improvement in programability from the first credit card dictionary tho I have to say I miss the size and feel of the old ones.Al
